San Pablo Stroll – June 29th

The Grease Diner is proud to announce that we are featured in SPAGGIA’s (first ever) San Pablo Stroll.  SPAGGIA is a community-run organization that is focused on Oakland’s Golden Gate District.

From the Golden Gate District’s website:

“On Saturday, June 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. SPAGGIA will be hosting the first ever San Pablo Stroll along the avenue and around the Golden Gate District. Celebrating all of our new merchants, galleries, and eateries plus all of our favorites.

We’ll be having a raffle with lots of wonderful prizes, with the drawing to be held at Actual Cafe at the end of the Stroll!”

For more info on SPAGGIA and the golden gate district please visit their website — here.

More about the San Pablo Stroll, including links to other featured local businesses can be found here.

The Grease Diner will be doing free silk screen workshops during the San Pablo Stroll.  Times are at 11:45 and 1:15.  See you there!

Opening Party – 6/8/2013

The Grease Diner opening party totally kicked ass.

The gallery was opened extra big for Laurie Shapiro’s work at East Bay Open Studios.  Her studio turned into a stage for the three bands – the Yoots, Ocean View, and Naked Lights.

Here are some photos of the event.

Shipwreck Black and some press

The Grease Diner is very excited to be featured on boygirl creative.  Visit boygirl magazine to read this article about our opening on June 1st.  Boygirl creative is an art magazine based out of New York.  It is updated daily and features interviews and stories about artists from all over the world.

For the past few days, Jon Jon and I have been redesigning the interior of our storefront.  Minor details that are making a big difference.  When we first entered our place, the entire warehouse was blue: baby blue walls and ceiling, and layers of blue carpet.  It felt stuffy and like a smurf exploded in the place.  It’s been a lot of work, remodeling the place, but we’re learning a lot and acquiring new skills about renovation and design.  With Jon Jon’s commercial painting skills, and my painting skills as a fine artist, we’ve come up with a new wood finish: Shipwreck Black.

Our next step is doing the wooden decks in the same way.  More photos to come soon. 🙂
Our construction phase is almost over.

Opening: June 1st 2013

“You’ve only been here seven months, and you’re opening a store already.”

It’s a normal remark that we hear at this point.  Jon and I joke about it.  We don’t have any time to waste, I tell Jon.  Although, it’s funny, it’s also exciting how fast things have been moving since we’ve been in the bay area.

Jon was telling me the other day how moving to Oakland has been a lot different than when he moved to other cities.  Instead of searching for people and trying to meet everybody, he’s going with the flow.  Meeting people as they come and doing the work that he needs to do.

And, the two of us have been working hard.  Hella hard.  The Grease Diner is going to be opening June 1st, 2013.  Three weeks away, lots of progress done, and some more work to go.

So, that’s the news.  East bay open studios.  June 1st and 2nd, 8th and 9th.  We’ll be open from 11am – 9pm.  Come by for some gluten free and vegan cookies.

Lots of love,
